Wheels Day is coming!
I’m sure most of you are familiar with the Surrey Street Rodders – "Wheels Day". This is the first big show of the season that puts a stake in the ground of the calendar, telling us that the better weathers coming, and that it is time to wake those American sleeping beauties from their winter slumber.
Wheels Day 2008
Last years show despite the early date in March enjoyed a fantastic turnout of cars, bikes, trucks, traders and crowd, with plenty to see and experience for all the family including a band, funfair and memorabilia.
The famous “Roarin Rat” was on display near the bandstand. I stood looking at this car – a legend in my lifetime, and it took me back to my childhood when I first saw it in those pictures in Custom Car Magazine, usually with a very pretty, scantily clad lady alongside or draped over it.
The Legend - "Roarin Rat"
I didn’t count them all but there must have been getting on for 2,000 vehicles at the show, some famous, some not so famous, some immaculate and some a rolling project, but all great to see and hear!
They must have booked the weather to be dry for the show because the threatening grey skies didn’t materialise into anything until the show was nearing its end.
I’m not sure whether it was a rumble of thunder or the rumble of a big block Chevelle that signaled the end. The Chevelle laid rubber for so long it seemed that time itself had stopped. When the smoke cleared (including from inside the Chevelle) the marshals had arrived and the daylight was straining to get through the black clouds. The rain and hail came and the cars and crowds dispersed.
Wheels Day 2008
Another Wheels Day had come and gone, but you couldn’t be sad because this was the start – the start of another summer of cruising.
