35th Wheels Day
Another Wheels Day has come and gone, and it’s incredible to think that 2010 marked the 35th Wheels Day – well done to the Surrey Street Rodders.
I know from the online forums, Facebook and my own experiences with fellow cruzers, there was the usual angst over the weather - and as per tradition some rain was involved.
It’s funny really because we all keep checking to see what the weather will be doing as Wheels Day approaches, and it always seems to be bright and pleasant the day before. But in our hearts we all know that no matter what the weather does decide to throw at us on the day, we will all still go and enjoy the event that it is.
With a clear run down we made good time, and on joining the Hogs Back (A31) the sight of American, Rods, Classics and Customs became quite frequent and as is often the case they naturally link together to form a motor procession towards the arena.
We arrived about 9.30 and as we edged our way down the bowl, it was clear to see there was already a great turn out. With the odd exception most of us were able to cross the grass without becoming bogged down and parked up with ease. The trade stands were already busy and there were plenty of people milling around the ranks of cars on display.
Whilst walking around the cars and trade stands an occasional patch of blue sky emerged and it looked like we might get away with it becoming a nice day. The band then started playing, the general mood became a buzz and the kids enjoyed colouring in pictures of Rods & Customs in the Surrey Street Rodders tent, to try and win themselves an Easter Egg!
One of the great things at this event is the diversity of machinery on display, from the well used look of a Rat Rod to an immaculately finished whatever, they are all magnificent – and that goes for the bikes and trikes too!
But as late morning came the heavens opened and it rained.......and rained......and rained.
After an hour or so of constant cold and heavy rain, and with little prospect of the conditions improving, a few decided to make a move. The reasonable firm ground that had been quite supportive upon arrival started to cut up in places thanks to a few that clearly had more horsepower than sense.
As it turned out, the afternoon did dry up which made for a pleasant cruze home – At last the car season had now officially started and this was the first of many more great days out to come this year – I was sure of that!
